Biochar is organic matter that is burned slowly, usually with a restricted flow of oxygen. The fire is stopped when the material reaches the charcoal stage. This forms coarse lumps of charcoal which are full of crevices and holes, trillions of beneficial soil microorganisms populate. This greatly increases the productivity of the soil.
